Background
The Institutional Research Special Interest Group (IR-SIG) is established to advance the practice and impact of institutional research within South African higher education. Recognising that universities face increasing pressure to improve student success, demonstrate accountability, and optimise resource allocation through evidence-based decision-making, the IR-SIG provides a dedicated platform for institutional researchers, data analysts, planners, scholarship of IR, and higher education leaders to engage and collaborate. The group addresses critical challenges, including compliance, best practices in IR, reporting, emerging technologies in IR, staff productivity modelling, infrastructure planning, and integrating stakeholder engagement and buy-in. The main idea is to create a community of practice. The IR-SIG aims to elevate the quality, consistency, and strategic influence of IR functions across both public and private universities in South Africa.
